During ceremonies, the bench is reserved for gong and drum performers, forming the core of the ritual soundscape.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n A kpan is carved from a single large tree trunk, typically measuring between 5 and 15 meters in length. Its ends are shaped like boat prows, expressing strength and craftsmanship.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n However, its significance lies not only in its physical form but also in the collective process of its creation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Making a kpan requires the participation of the entire community. From selecting the tree and performing rituals to ask permission from forest spirits, to cutting and carving the wood, every step follows strict customary practices under the guidance of a ritual specialist. Once completed, the kpan is ceremonially brought into the house in a ritual similar to welcoming a new family member.
