This hearth is used for welcoming guests, preparing drinks, and roasting or grinding coffee, but it does not include an overhead rack and is not used for daily cooking.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u00f4k section serves as the main living space of the extended matrilineal family. It is divided into compartments, each belonging to a smaller household unit, with its own hearth for daily use. Multiple families live together in one longhouse, sharing agricultural work and resources, reflecting a strong sense of communal life.At the end of the house is the main communal hearth, typically associated with the household of the senior woman. This is the central cooking space for the entire extended family. Above it is a wooden rack used for smoking and preserving food such as gourds and fish, as well<\/em> as drying seeds like maize or gourds. The smoke not only preserves food but also shapes the distinctive atmosphere of the living space.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
