Their significance extends into social relations, marriage, and spiritual life. A Mn\u00f4ng proverb states: \u201cTo farm, one needs a fence; to marry, one needs a jar,\u201d highlighting the essential role of jars in forming a household.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In matrilineal societies such as the \u00ca\u0111\u00ea, Gia Rai, and Chu Ru, jars are often passed down to daughters, especially the youngest, who is responsible for caring for aging parents. In marriage ceremonies, jars\u2014alongside textiles and jewelry\u2014serve as indispensable bridewealth, reflecting the family\u2019s prosperity and status.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Beyond their material value, jars carry deep spiritual meaning. Each jar is believed to house a spirit, and different spirits are associated with different types of jars. Their use in rituals is therefore strictly regulated, including the number and type of jars required. Certain jars are reserved for elders or respected figures, and are not to be used by younger individuals.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Jars accompany individuals throughout their life cycle\u2014from naming ceremonies at birth to weddings and funerals. In funerary practices, jars are brought to the grave house and intentionally broken, symbolizing their transfer to the afterlife.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Importantly, jars are believed to have a \u201clife\u201d of their own. When a valuable jar enters a household, a ritual is performed to welcome it as a new member. Similarly, when a jar is exchanged or broken, farewell or appeasement rituals must be conducted.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Most jars were historically acquired through trade from ceramic centers in central and southern Vietnam, each with distinct forms, glazes, and values.
