The simple type, called hg\u0103l, is made from a small log with carved steps. The main ladder, known as \u00eanhan pla \u0111ang, is a large wooden plank, carefully shaped and placed at the front of the longhouse.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nIts most distinctive feature is the carved decoration at the upper section: a pair of breasts (ks\u00e2o) and a crescent moon (mlan). These motifs symbolize the mother\u2014the central figure in the matrilineal household\u2014and the agricultural rhythm tied to lunar cycles.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nTouching the carved breasts while ascending the ladder is believed to bring protection and well-being. Thus, the ladder functions as a sacred threshold between the outside world and the domestic, spiritual space of the home.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nAmong the Gia Rai and Ba Na, ladder forms vary depending on house size and terrain. Longhouses in lowland areas often have taller ladders, while smaller houses on plateaus use shorter ones.
