Petrified wood is formed through the gradual replacement of organic material by minerals under specific geological conditions. Between approximately 4 and 12 million years ago, volcanic eruptions occurred across the Central Highlands. Lava flows rich in silica (SiO₂) swept through ancient forests, burying trees beneath layers of molten rock and sediment. In low-oxygen conditions, some trees were not burned but instead underwent mineralization, with each cell gradually replaced by minerals over millions of years.
Today, petrified wood is often found within red basaltic soil layers, occasionally exposed after heavy rains or floods. In Vietnam, it is most commonly discovered in the Central Highlands, particularly around the Chư A Thai mountain range (Gia Lai Province). Globally, petrified wood is also found in regions such as Indonesia, Australia, the United States, and Russia.
Beyond its scientific importance in reconstructing ancient environments and climate history, petrified wood holds aesthetic and cultural value. In many traditions, it is regarded as a precious material, used for decorative objects and believed to bring luck, health, and longevity.👉 As a “memory of the forest” preserved within the earth, petrified wood reminds us of nature’s deep history and our responsibility to protect it.
