Rìu là một trong những công cụ cổ xưa của loài người, xuất hiện từ thời tiền sử và được sử dụng rộng rãi trong chế tác, khai thác gỗ, săn bắt và cả trong nghi lễ. Ở Tây Nguyên, rìu (Jông) là vật dụng quen thuộc của người Êđê, dùng để đốn cây, bổ củi, đục đẽo và tạo tác các sản phẩm gỗ.

Không chỉ là công cụ lao động, rìu còn mang ý nghĩa tâm linh sâu sắc. Trong nghi lễ cúng thần rừng, các chàng trai thực hiện điệu múa rìu nhằm thể hiện sức mạnh và xua đuổi tà ma. Sau điệu múa, lưỡi rìu được phóng vào thân cây đã chọn. Nếu rìu còn cắm lại đến ngày hôm sau, điều đó được xem là dấu hiệu thần linh cho phép hạ cây; ngược lại, người ta phải tìm cây khác và thực hiện nghi lễ từ đầu.

Rìu cũng xuất hiện trong các nghi lễ hiến sinh, khi được bôi huyết vật tế để mời gọi thần linh và cầu mong mùa màng, cuộc sống no đủ. Ngày nay, dù nhiều công cụ hiện đại đã thay thế, rìu vẫn được sử dụng và lưu giữ như một phần của đời sống và văn hóa truyền thống.

The axe is one of humanity’s oldest tools, dating back to prehistoric times, widely used for shaping, cutting wood, hunting, and ritual purposes. In the Central Highlands, the axe (Jông) is a familiar tool among the Êđê people, used for felling trees, chopping wood, carving, and crafting wooden objects.

Beyond its practical function, the axe holds deep spiritual significance. In rituals dedicated to forest spirits, young men perform an axe dance to display strength and ward off evil forces. At the end of the dance, the axe blade is thrown into a selected tree. If it remains embedded until the next day, it is believed that the spirits have granted permission to cut the tree; otherwise, another tree must be chosen and the ritual repeated.

The axe also appears in sacrificial ceremonies, where it is anointed with the blood of offerings to invite spirits and pray for prosperity and well-being. Today, despite the presence of modern tools, the axe continues to be used and preserved as part of cultural tradition.
